10 steps to maintaining your mental health – Meet New Year 2021

Psychiatric illnesses constitute five of every ten illnesses that cause loss of functionality. The vast majority of people with mental health problems cannot seek treatment due to social pressure. The frequency and prevalence of psychiatric illnesses are gradually increasing and affect all segments of the society. Today, one out of every four people is affected by mental illness at some time in their lives. More than half (50.8%) of people aged 75 have experienced any mental illness.

 If psychiatric diseases are not treated, they cause personal, social and financial loss. According to the research of the World Health Organization; In the world, psychiatric diseases constitute five of the ten diseases that cause loss of functionality. These diseases are; depression, alcohol use, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. When anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorders and schizophrenia are not treated adequately, they cause more functional, loss of work power and familial problems.

Psychiatric illnesses are not limited to severe mental illnesses that disrupt a person's relationship with reality. In fact, such severe illnesses constitute a small proportion of all mental problems. Today, stigmatization and exclusion of people with mental problems due to reasons such as urbanization, population growth, and future anxiety also causes social problems. On the one hand, stigmatization and exclusion cause those with mental health problems to avoid seeking treatment.

1. Take care of yourself

Mentally healthy individuals tend to hold their own interests somewhat above the interests of others. Do not be afraid to do the things you enjoy. Minimize delays as much as possible. Do not forget to spare time for yourself, you are also important.

2. Be tolerant

We can make mistakes ourselves and others too… Knowing that everyone can make mistakes and acting accordingly is good for us.

3. Endure uncertainty

Expecting everything to be predictable will increase inner restlessness. We have no chance of being 100 percent sure of the future.

4. Be flexible

Strict, prejudiced and unwavering principles are one of the biggest obstacles to your happiness.

5. Know your responsibilities

Taking responsibility for your emotions, thoughts and actions is part of adulthood. Stop blaming others, the world, or your destiny for every negativity.

6. Keep your frustration threshold high

Healthy individuals take action on conditions and situations they can change, accept that they cannot change or rely on it. Because the way to cope with difficulties is through struggle, endurance, or separation.

7. Make realistic expectations

Rather than setting unattainable goals and being disappointed, going through small goals step by step or changing goals when necessary is good for despair.

8. Accept yourself as you are

Do not compare yourself with others, do not measure your worth based on others' comments, and do not bother to prove yourself to others.

9. Interact with people

The fact that a person does not just rotate around his own axis and keeps his interpersonal relationships warm makes the individual happier.

10. Take care of the community

Being a part of the society makes the individual feel more comfortable, safer and happier. To act according to social moral values; Protecting both their own rights and the rights of others and contributing to the continuity of the society, even if only a little, helps the person to feel well-being.
